Ailis McSweeney was Leevale’s second athlete in action at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Paris today. Competing in the 60m flat event, she made it through from this morning’s heats by the tightest of margins, and went in the first of the semis this afternoon. From lane 1, she finished a creditable 7th in 7.34s, just outside her season’s best. Unfortunately, this was not enough to qualify for the final, which would have required breaking the Irish record by some margin. Nonetheless, this European Championships is the culmination of a very good indoor season for Ailis.
Earlier this morning Ailis had finished 4th in the heats, outside the automatic qualifying spots, and had an anxious wait before finding out if her time of 7.38s was quick enough to get through as one of the 4 fastest losers. At the end, the time was just good enough to take the final qualifying spot.
