Ciarán Ó Lionáird was in action this morning in the final of the 1500m at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. It has been an outstanding championships for the Macroom man, at the end of a spectacularly successful outdoor track season. Running a positive race throughout in the final, he was just run out of it in a quick last 300m, and he finished a creditable 10th in the end in his third-fastest time ever of 3:37.81. The experience of running against the top middle-distance athletes in the world will surely stand to Ciarán in years to come.
Earlier there was disappointment for Derval O’Rourke as she was forced to withdraw from the semis of the 100m hurdles due to a calf strain sustained in the heats.
