Huge Leevale showing at Ballycotton

One of the last of the year’s evening road races took place this evening in Ballycotton. The 5 miler, which was the final race in the Ballycotton Summer Series, took place in ideal conditions after a day of torrential downpours.

There was a massive Leevale turnout for this race that had a record entry of well over 500 athletes. The black and amber featured very prominently at the start line and there was no let up as the race got going as there were some great Leevale performances. Lizzie Lee, fresh from winning the national 5K on the track, was back in winning form on the road, taking the ladies’ race in style in 28:53. Carmel Parnell won the F55 category and actually finished 3rd overall in the women’s race. Along with Ann Moore, who won the F45 category, they combined to take victory in the team competition, just one point ahead of Eagle.

The Leevale men were also to the fore in the overall standings. Tim Twomey is improving with each passing week and tonight showed no fear in running stride for stride with Seán McGrath throughout, and at the end was beaten only by the East Cork man. Behind him were seasoned athletes, Noel Berkeley and Roy Fahy. Cillian Ó Tuama finished 5th and Philip Crowley was the first junior in 10th, and together they also took the team title for Leevale.

In the final standings for the summer series, Niamh Walsh took second overall behind Rhona Lynch, while Ann Moore and Rosaleen McKeown were 5th and 6th respectively.
