The Cork City Marathon took place this morning in ideal conditions. For the first time overall honours went to an overseas athlete, Freddie Kearon of Kenya, who set a course record of 2:22:11 in the process. First Leevale athlete home was Colm Moore, who has improved massively this year and finished 9th overall in 2:40:07.
The women’s title was successfully defended by Clonmel’s Angela McCann. The half-marathon ladies’ title was also sucessfully defended; Lizzie Lee took gold in 80:34, just outside her time from last year. Karl Walsh was well up the field in the men’s race, finishing 4th in 72:41 in a close finish for 2nd.
In the team relay event, the Leevale men’s team’s remarkable run of 2nd place finishes continued; they have finished 2nd now 5 years in a row! This year had the closest finish yet, with a team from Waterford eventually prevailing by just 8 seconds from Leevale and the Maher’s Sports team. The Leevale team’s time of 2:21:43 was their fastest yet. The team members were John Shine, Tim Twomey, Cillian Ó Tuama, Barry Donovan and Chris Harrington. The Leevale ladies team had a good finish also in 2:55:25, just behind a Kerry ladies’ team.
