Relays bring successful indoor season to a close

An exciting day of relay completions brings the 2012 indoor season to a close. Of the nine Leevale teams that competed in the championships, five won medals.

Once again the boys U15 put in an excellent performance to win by a big margin in a time of 1:43.89. This is a well balanced team who always give an exhibition of baton changing.

Leevale won their second title when the U12 boys won comfortably in a time of 56.4. Competition for places on this team remains strong which augurs well for the outdoor season.

The GU19 got the tactics just right to take a well-deserved silver in their race. The GU12 race was fought hard with the Leevale team taking bronze in this instance.

The GU16 team put in the bravest performance of the day. First athlete Laura McCarthy had an excellent start in lane 4. However, coming off the bend the baton hit the fence and was knocked from her hand. To her credit she stopped, waited for all athletes to pass and then collected the baton, taking off after the field, now a distant 30m-40m behind. Then something special happened; her team-mates Taylor Murphy, Ciara Nalty & Louise Shanahan all put in sublime performances to bring the team back into third place just before the finish line, earning well-deserved bronze medals.

We now look forward the Leevale T&F meet in two weeks’ time, on April 14th & 15th at the CIT.
