Leevale had a double double at the County Senior Cross Country Championships in Carrignavar today, winning the individual and team titles in both men’s and women’s races.
Lizzie Lee has dominated this race over the last number of years and turned on the style again today, winning comfortably ahead of Claire McCarthy of St. Finbarr’s. Sinéad O’Connor is back in form again was next Leevale finisher in 5th. Next came Ann Moore and Carol Finn in 10th and 11th respectively, bringing the Leevale team home to retain their title by just a 3 point margine from Eagle.
The men’s team was without reigning county champion, Barry Donovan, and Tim Twomey, the top two Leevale finishers from last year. However, the addition of Mark Hanrahan and Bryan Keane made a massive difference. Mark was untroubled as he eased home to victory, ahead of Bryan who ran consistently throughout. The East Cork duo James McCarthy and Sean McGrath came next, just ahead of Chris Harrington in 5th. Eric Curran, just up from the junior ranks, had a great race to hold on for 7th. This gave the Leevale team an impressive total of just 15 points, worthy winners of the title ahead of East Cork.
In the junior races Philip Crowley ran a brave race to hang in with the Togher athletes as long as he could and came home a good 4th, while it was good to see Leevale represented in the junior women’s race, Aisling Hanrahan and Denise Hallahan finished 6th and 7th respectively.
