There was plenty of road and cross country action on the domestic scene this weekend. The Irish Schools’ Cross Country Championships were held at St. Mary’s College, Galway yesterday and Luke Horgan was the top Leevale finisher with a 5th placing in the Junior Boys race. This is a great result for Luke, who has had a great cross country season, and no doubt a reflection of the great work Ken Nason has been doing with his gang. Just behind Luke was his teammate Abdi Mohamed, who is new to running this year. Abdi has also had a great cross country season and both he an Luke have now been selected on the Irish team for the Schools’ International later this month.

Also yesterday the IUAA Cross Country Championships were held in Waterford. There was an unusually small number of Leevale athletes in action for their colleges. Barry Donovan, who is coming back from a bout of persistent injuries, was top performer with a 28th placing in a high-quality men’s field.
The Munster Senior & Novice Road Championships took place at Ballyanly, Inniscarra today. Leevale had no teams in the women’s events, and weakened teams in the men’s. John Shine was the top finisher in 12th overall, followed by Colm Moore in 15th. The Leevale team finished 2nd in the Senior event, and 4th in the Novice.

Meanwhile, this morning a BHAA 5K took place in Mahon, where Mark Bickerdike won his M45 category.

As well as all the action on the road, Leevale had two athletes in action at the Schull duathlon on Saturday. Chris Mintern won the men’s event, posting the fastest times for the 3K and 5K run, while Lizzie won the women’s team event, also posting the fastest splits for the running section. Donie’s winter training is obviously paying dividends for our triathletes as well!
