A strong contingent of juvenile, junior & senior Leevale athletes travelled to Santry today for the AAI Inter County Championships. Conditions were ideal for cross country running, dry and mild. The course was in great condition and was ideal for athletes and spectators alike.
In the senior men’s race, Mark Hanrahan was the top Cork finisher in 9th place, the Cork team outclassed on this occasion by the strong Dublin and Antrim teams. The latter provided the individual winner also in Paul Pollock. Ben Thistlewood was 21st was the next Cork finisher, he and Mark coming away with bronze team medals. Eric Curran also had a good race to finish 9th in the U23 category.
In the women’s race, the Leevale ladies represented the Cork team well. Claire McCarthy (11th), Sinéad O’Connor (25th) and Carol Finn (32nd) were all in the scoring Cork four that took bronze team medals. The women’s race was won in emphatic style by Fionnuala Britton who was extremely impressive.
In the junior men’s event, Cork county champion Conor Walter finished 21st. Philip Crowley (32nd) and Brandon Malone (39th) also made the Cork team that again finished 3rd.
David Fox running up an age finished a fantastic 9th in the BU18 race.
