The Cork City Sports/Evening Echo/96FM/C103 Athlete of the Month award ceremony was held at the River Lee Hotel this afternoon. Leevale athletes Lizzie Lee and Claire McCarthy received the awards for September & October respectively.
In September Lizzie won the Cork Mini-Marathon, before travelling to Germany to compete in the Berlin marathon, where she finished in 9th place and was third European athlete home. Lizzie knocked over 8 minutes off her PB to post a time of 2:38:09.
In October Claire McCarthy took a fantastic second at Dublin City Marathon. Claire ran a gutsy race and had a great battle with Maria McCambridge throughout, eventually losing out to the Dublin woman by just half a minute. Claire’s 2:39.27 was all the more impressive given the less than ideal running conditions.
It is testament to the strength of middle distance running in Leevale that there are now has two sub-2:40 women marathon runners in the club.
