Derval set for bronze as Yanit is banned

Turkish sprint hurdler, Nevin Yanit was given a two-year ban today for multiple doping violations. Yanit won the gold medal in the 60mH at the European Indoors back in March, a race in which Leevale’s Derval O’Rourke finished an agonising 4th. The doping ban was for “multiple positive findings in both in-competition and out-of-competition tests”, according to the IAAF.

Today’s ban means that Yanit will be stripped of her gold medal with Derval likely to be upgraded to bronze, though this has yet to be confirmed by European Athletics. This is a bittersweet result for Derval; though she was denied her rightful place on the podium in March, it will be some consolation to have her 3rd placing now recognised.
