Santry was the host venue for the 1st League of European Athletics Team Championships this year, where the Irish team competed against 11 other teams. The combined Irish men’s and women’s team had their best ever performance at this level, finishing 7th overall to comfortably maintain their position in the league for next year. It was an encouraging performance from a relatively young Irish team who were without several of their big names.
A number of Leevale athletes competed over the weekend. Michelle Finn competed in the steeplechase on Saturday and finished 9th in 10:07 to gain 4 points for the team. This was a good result for Michelle on her first international cap. David Quilligan finished 11th in the long jump and Dennis Finnegan 12th in the triple, the weekend counting as good experience for both young athletes. Ailis McSweeney is no stranger to this level of competition and was on the Irish 4x100m team that took a great 2nd place behind the Czech Republic to gain 10 points overall.
