Over thirty club athletes, young and old, officials and parents attended a special function at the Cork City Council Chambers last Wednesday evening. Leevale president, Mr. Finbarr O’Brien was also in attendance. The event was at the special invitation of Lord Mayor, Cllr John Buttimer. The invitation was offered to the club for its contribution to Cork sport in general and to athletics in particular. In his speech the Lord Mayor commended the club on its contribution to Cork and to Irish athletics, and to its success in bringing athletes to international level. He mentioned the great Fr. Nessan, who was a prime mover in the formation of the club. The name Leevale was synonymous with Cork and international athletics. He praised the recent international successes of Lizzie Lee and Ciarán Ó Lionáird.
Club chairman, Liam Horgan thanked the Mayor for his invitation and praised the efforts of all athletes and officials who contributed so much to the success of the club over the last 46 years.
