It was a medal fest for Leevale athletes at the Munster U14-U19 Indoor Championships. In a well-attended competitive meet Leevale athletes excelled.
DAY 1 started on a high with the middle distance events. First with gold for Leevale was Louise Shanahan in the GU17 800m, in a time of 2:18.20. This was a new championship record. This was followed with second & third place finishes for Abdi Mohammad & Matthew Murnane respectively in the BU16 1500m.
Luke Horgan then took gold with a great sprint finish in the BU17 1500m. Conor Walter completed the middle distance medal haul with a second place in the BU19 1500m.
Jack Murphy completed a double by winning both the BU16 high jump and 60m hurdles. Jack won the high jump with a comfortable 170 cm and was a clear winner in the hurdles.
In was then the turn of the girl sprinters to take medals.
GU16 Laura Murphy finished third in both the 60m & 200m races.
GU17 Marie O’Halloran finished second 60m sprint.
GU18 Emma O’Brien was second in the 60m and third in the 200m races.
GU19 Kate Waterman has really found form this year winning the 200m and finishing second in the 60m.
The medal haul was rounded off with a Bronze for Padraig O’Callaghan in the BU14 shot putt. Padraig’s throwing career continues to develop.
DAY 2 once again stated with the middle distance events. Matthew Murnane was first up in the BU16 800m. Matt took the race on setting a strong pace; he finished a very close second setting a new PB, 2:08.56.
Louise Shanahan was next up in the GU17 1500m. Louise ran a strong race, sprinted clear at the finish to take her second gold, knocking 5 seconds off her PB in the process.
Jack Murphy completed a treble when he won the BU16 long jump in a new PB by achieving the 6m mark.
Luke Ring also completed a double as he convincingly won both the BU16 60m & 200m sprints. Adam Buckley made his mark by finishing third in the BU16 200m.
Marie O’Halloran had another good day at the track: she finished second in both GU17 60m hurdles and long jump competitions.
Lydia O’Connor took silver in the GU19 long jump.
Robert Cregan put in great performance to win the BU14 60m sprint with a championship best performance of 7.88.
All in all a great weekend for Leevale juvenile athletes.
