Alex Wright (Leevale AC) put in a stunning performance as he strode to victory in a 50K race in Germany today. What’s remarkable about this performance is that it was Alex’s debut at the distance.
His winning time of 3 hrs 51 mins 28 secs puts him in third place on the Irish all time list behind Robert Heffernan and Jamie Costin and ahead of Colin Griffin and Brendon Boyce.
The result is also a huge fillip for the Cork Race Walking academy headed by world champion Robert Heffernan. The stable also includes Leevale’s Luke Hickey.
Today’s performance is a qualifying time for next years world championships for Wright although he will more than likely opt for the 20K as he will be targeting that qualifying time early in the new year.
