There were strong performances for Leevale athletes at the first round of the AAI Senior Indoor League in Athlone IT today. Competition levels are strong this year with 18 men’s teams and 13 women’s team competing. Leevale men finish the day in 4th place and the women team are joint 1st going into round 2.
Men’s Team: Maximum points were gained for the men by Dave Tierney in the shot putt & Sam Healy in the long jump. Matt Murnane pickup a valuable 11 points in the 800m by finishing second in his heat and Des Kelleher competed in the pole vault. Kodi ran a very strong 60m sprint, finishing second in his heat.
Women’s Team: Louise Shanahan won the women 800m, while Una Samuels matched her PB of 2.60m in the pole vault to finish second. Shona Lowe finished second in her heat and 3rd overall in the 60m sprint, while Lorraine Carr gained valuable points in the 60m Hurdles and shot putt. Jessica Sheehan was unfortunate in the long jump to have four consecutive breaks.
We are now looking forward to round 2 in three weeks time on Saturday January 31st.
