Nollaigh Retains Cork City Marathon Title

The Cork City Marathon took place this morning in muggy conditions and the Leevale singlets were very prominent at the head of the field.

Nollaigh O’Neill has a great record in this race and set about retaining her title from last year. This she did in style, coming across the line 40 seconds past the 3-hour mark. Brian Hegarty also had title aspirations, but on the day found the going tough over the last few miles, and had to settle for 3rd behind Philip Harty and Eoin Sugrue. Track specialist Finbarr O’Dwyer showed that he is as comfortable in the marathon as over 800m, finishing 5th overall in a new PB for him.

In the team relay events, Leevale had three teams in the top 5, which was a great performance. The Leevale men’s team were well ahead of the pack in 2:23:31, and the women’s team were also first home in their category, their winning time 2:42:23. The Leevale mixed team finished just ahead of the women, fourth overall in 2:40.

Another great performance on the day came from Dave Comber and Donal Coakley who completed the half marathon in full super-hero body suits! They had time to high-five spectators all the way around the course, which they still managed to complete in around 90 mins. A worthy effort in aid of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland.
