A group of 10 Leevale athletes represented their schools and Munster schools with distinction at the Tailteann games interprovincial games held in Morton stadium yesterday. The importance of this prestigious event has increased this year due to rule changes making it the sole trial for Schools International selection, where the first 2 past the post gain selection for the Irish team.
Conor Callinan got the competition under way with victory in the Pole Vault with a clearance of 3.75m. Una Brice took 2nd in the girls Pole Vault with 2.90m.
Emily Wall led from the gun and ran fluently to take the girls 300m Hurdles in 44.73m. Immediately before that Harry Nevin turned in a lung bursting performance to take silver in a very eventful boys 400m Hurdles race, clocking an impressive 55.69s.
Emily, Una, Conor and Harry have booked their places on the Irish team for the schools international to be held in Swansea on 20th July.
Lucy Sleeman just missed out with a 4th placing in the 80m Hurdles (12.02s). Lucy earlier finished 4th in the 100m (12.83s) where she was followed by Ava Cashman (13.13s). James Ezeonu took 4th in the boys 200m (22.79s).
Helen Moynihan finished 6th in the girls Javelin (32.82m), Holly Umeh 7th in the Shot (11.34m) and Orlaith Onoh 7th in the Triple Jump (10.01m).
This was a very young team of talented u17 athletes with all 10 eligible for the Intermediate schools grade again in 2020, and the majority eligible for SIAB selection again next year.
