Leevale athletes were in flying form at the National Junior & U23 Indoor Championships in Athlone today, setting standards with national records.
Leevale Pole Vaulters continue to set records. In the junior men’s event Conor Callinan won the title with a new championship record of 4.65m from Joshua Fitzgerald 4.00m, while his club mate Una Brice won the junior women’s title with championship record at 3.60m.
In the junior women’s 4x200m relay the Leevale team of Lucy Sleeman, Ella Scott, Okwu Backri and Fatima Amusa took victory and set a National Senior Club Record and a National Junior Championship Record of 1:40.79.
Lucy Sleeman put on a star performance in the 60m setting a new PB at 7.41m and taking the National Junior Championship title. The 17-year-old was a strong feature at the National Senior Championships last month and has had an incredible indoor season. Following her over the line was DSD AC’s Jennifer Hanrahan and Ella Scott (Leevale AC). In the junior men’s 60m final Sean Carmody finished 2nd in a time of 8.32.
Lucy had the double when she won the 60m Hurdles in 8.68. Okwu Backari took Bronze in 8.88 and Elle Scott crossed the line in 4th place (9.04). In the junior men’s 60m final Sean Carmody finished 2nd in a time of 8.32 while in the U23 men 60mH Jack McGrath took silver in 8.52.
Fatima AMUSA won the junior women’s 200m in 25.16.
Ben Smith took bronze in the junior men’s 1500m with a time of 4:04.06.
Club Captain Ryan Duggan secured bronze with a putt of 12.48m in the U23 men’s shot putt.
