Farewell Ciarán

Ciarán Ó Lionáird was laid to rest yesterday in his beloved home village of Inchigeelagh following a truly special farewell that reflected the impact he had on so many lives.

The athletics community joined with the people of Inchigeelagh and the wider Muskerry area to celebrate the life of a remarkable athlete and cherished friend. There is always something special about a rural funeral, but there was an extraordinary sense of community, support, and shared grief throughout the day as people gathered to honour one of their own.

The beautiful music of the Coolea Choir provided a fitting and often moving backdrop to reflections on Ciarán’s life and achievements. Heartfelt tributes captured not only his exceptional accomplishments on the track but also the qualities that made him so admired away from athletics.

Tony Shine delivered a wonderful eulogy, recalling Ciarán’s outstanding athletics career and the dedication that took him from the roads and trails of West Cork to the world’s greatest stages. Ciarán’s brother offered a deeply personal insight into what it was like to be part of the orbit of such a focused, determined, and truly exceptional talent, while also sharing memories of the brother and son they loved so dearly.

As Leevale AC joins with the wider athletics community in mourning Ciarán’s untimely passing, we also celebrate a life that inspired so many. His legacy will endure through the countless athletes he motivated, the friendships he forged, and the memories he leaves behind.

Farewell, Ciarán. You will never be forgotten.
