The first outdoor T&F meet of the season took place yesterday evening at CIT. The Munster Varsities T&F Meet was jointly hosted by CIT and UCC it was a great evening’s track action that gave an opportunity for varsity athletes and guests to gauge their early-season form.
There were some good performances for Leevale athletes, who were both competing for their colleges and guesting in the event. There were wins for Paul Hazler in the in the discus with a throw of 40.17. Claire McSweeney had an easy win in the 800m with 2:18.
Cathal Owens was involved in a very tight finish with Barry Upton in the 400m, eventually just beaten on the line by the WIT man. Cathal’s time of 51.32 was respectable early-season running on a cool evening.
John Shine took the pace out from the very start in the 1500m, but Michael Dowling of WIT ran a canny race and put in a strong last lap to take victory in 4:02, ahead of John in 4:07. Philip Crowley ran a good race in a competitive 800m to finish 5th in 2:03.
